Job Overview

The Carrier Sales Manager is responsible for developing and managing relationships with freight carriers, negotiating competitive shipping rates, and ensuring efficient transportation operations. This role involves strategic carrier procurement, rate negotiation, and logistics coordination to optimize freight movement while maximizing profitability.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in freight brokerage, carrier sourcing, and logistics sales, along with exceptional communication and negotiation skills to secure high-quality carriers and maintain long-term partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

Carrier Procurement & Relationship Management

  • Source, develop, and manage a network of reliable trucking carriers to move freight efficiently.
  • Negotiate competitive freight rates while ensuring service quality and compliance.
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing carriers to ensure capacity availability and long-term partnerships.
  • Proactively identify carrier needs and match them with available freight opportunities.

Rate Negotiation & Cost Management

  • Negotiate rates with carriers to secure profitable and cost-effective transportation solutions.
  • Monitor market trends and adjust pricing strategies to remain competitive.
  • Optimize carrier contracts to maintain service level agreements (SLAs) and cost control.
  • Implement cost-saving strategies to maximize margins while maintaining service quality.

Freight Coordination & Load Management

  • Assign and match freight loads to carriers based on lane preferences, capacity, and pricing.
  • Track shipments and provide real-time updates to customers and internal teams.
  • Ensure on-time deliveries while proactively solving potential transit issues.
  • Work closely with dispatchers, operations teams, and drivers to resolve service disruptions.

Data Analysis & Performance Monitoring

  • Track and analyze carrier performance metrics, including on-time delivery, service failures, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Use TMS (Transportation Management Systems) and analytics tools to monitor carrier efficiency.
  • Generate reports and insights on freight costs, carrier reliability, and operational performance.

Compliance & Industry Regulations

  • Ensure all carrier partners meet FMCSA, DOT, and company safety regulations.
  • Verify carrier insurance, authority, and certifications before assigning freight loads.
  • Stay up to date with industry regulations and compliance requirements to mitigate risks.

Collaboration & Customer Service

  • Work closely with sales, account management, and operations teams to ensure seamless logistics execution.
  • Communicate with customers and carriers to provide exceptional service and resolve any disputes or concerns.
  • Act as a liaison between carriers and shippers to facilitate efficient supply chain operations.
